Getting Started

Start viewing your drawings on your Palm device is very simple. Convert your dxf or dwf file into Palm compatible pdb format on your desktop S-View application, copy conveted files to external memory card or HotSync to your Palm, and view the drawing using your Palm S-View. That is all!

For example, let's say you want to view house.dxf on your Palm device. How do you do that?

Start sview.exe desktop application and open house.dxf file (menu command: "File->Open..."). Convert it to the house.pdb file (menu command:"File->Convert this file"). Copy the  house.pdb file from directory cnvrt (subdirectory in S-View installation directory) to memory card directory "/PALM/programs/SView" or install to Palm using HotSync. Run S-View on your Palm and start working with your drawings.

Here are some useful tips:

  • You can convert drawing file to pdb format without actually opening the file in S-View. Just use menu command "File->Convert list of files" instead of "File->Convert this file". You can use this command to convert list of selected files into the pdb format in a single run. Another way to create pdb file(s) is to use command line utility sviewcmd.exe. More details on conversion to pdb format can be found in Conversion to Palm compatible pdb format section.
  • You can install to Palm device and / or copy to memory card different directories as many files as you Palm device memory allows. It is very easy to switch between files on the device and that on the memory card as well as switch between memory card different directories. See S-View on Palm section for more details.
  • Conversion directory mentioned in the above example has default value, you can change it through settings dialog in S-View desktop.
  • S-View on Palm for better performance creates an image pdb cache file. Depending on the screen size and color resolution cache file size varies from ~200 K to ~1.5 Mb. S-View (Palm) will automatically try to switch to monochrome mode if there is no enough memory for color image cache. If your Palm device has limited memory, you can use command "Clean cache" after you finished working with application and want to free up this memory cache. The command will delete the pdb cache file. Also, keep in mind that when you open a drawing file located on the external card, a temporary copy of this file is created on the device. So there should be enough free space on device to accommodate for this temporary copy. This cache file gets automatically deleted when you stop working with the drawing.

Below is a little bit "more formal" and detailed step by step explanation:

  1. Complete your S-View installation (if it is not done yet) by installing sview.prc from the desktop installation subdirectory "Palm" (e.g. "C:\Program Files\S-View\Palm") to your Palm device. You can find more details on that in the S-View Installation section of this manual or in the ReadMe.txt file in your desktop installation directory.
  2. Run sview.exe from the desktop installation directory. Depending on your installation options, you can have S-View icon S-View icon shortcut on your PC and/or subfolder in the start menu to start S-View application.
  3. Open dxf or dwf file using menu "File->Open...".
  4. Convert file to pdb format  using menu "File->Convert this file". You can convert multiple files at a time using menu "File->Convert list of files". You can  also use command line conversion utility sviewcmd.exe. You can find more details on file conversion in the Conversion to Palm compatible pdb format section.
  5. Install pdb file(s) to your Palm device or just copy file(s) to the external memory card you are using with the Palm.
Converted files are located by default in "cnvrt" subdirectory of your desktop installation (e.g. "C:\Program Files\S-View\cnvrt"). You can always change conversion directory using "Settings->Conversion..." dialog in S-View.
IMPORTANT: Default location for files on memory card is "/PALM/programs/SView". If you put your file in another directory you have to change the path in the "Application settings" dialog ("Options->Application settings") in your Palm S-View application. Please, keep in mind: Palm memory card file system is case sensitive, i.e. directory "Palm" is not the same as "PALM".
  6. Run S-View on your Palm device by clicking S-View icon S-View icon. If you don't see file(s) in file list window, check that file location selector ("device"/"card") located in the top right corner is in correct state. Check that card directory is correct (see step 5). Select the file and tap the button "Open". Start working with drawing using toolbar tools: "Pan", "Zoom Box", "Zoom Move", history or bookmark navigation buttons. More about working with drawing on your Palm can be found in the  S-View on Palm section.
